This web page will list all scholarships, important dates, and any other pertinent senior information I am aware of for the entire year. I will continually add/delete information to this page as I get new information or if information changes. Green highlighted titles mean I have received information for the 2010-2011 school year and it is updated. Those titles remaining in black have not been updated for this school year.

Important Dates:
ACT Dates: Check the bulletin board outside Mrs. Hoover's office. Our school code is 171-230. If you have not taken the ACT or want to get a better score, you need to take it in October to meet most university/college scholarships deadlines. You can register online at www.actstudent.org.

Wendy's High School Heisman Scholarship: This scholarship honors both male and female high school students who excel in academics, athletics, and student leadership. The online application can be found at www.wendysheisman.com. Completed applications are due by October 1st by 5:00 p.m. central time. You will need to have an email address of a teacher, administrator, or counselor from HHS that will be able to review your information (can't be a relative).
Vocational Educational Scholarship: The Vocational Education Scholarship Program was established by the 1987 Kansas Legislature to provide financial assistance to full-time students who enroll in designated one or two-year vocational programs. Designated programs are located at various Kansas area technical schools/colleges, community colleges, Kansas State University - Salina, several four-year colleges and proprietary schools. Only certificate and selected two-year degree programs are included among the designated technical programs. Students with, or applying for, baccalaureate degrees are not eligible for funding. To apply for the vocational scholarship, you must be a Kansas resident (live in Kansas one year before attending a Kansas school and applying for any state aid), a graduate from an accredited high school (or received a GED from the Kansas Board of Regents), plan to enroll full time (12 credit hours) in a designated vocational program in Kansas,and take the designated vocational scholarship test. If notified as a recipient, a student will receive $500 for the first year with an opportunity to renew for a second year. See Mrs. Hoover for test registration or go to http://www.kansasregents.org/financial_aid/awards.html. The registration does cost $10 and must be postmarked by October 15th to take the test on October 31st. (Look in February section for alternative date).
Horatio Alger Scholarship: Must have at least a 2.0 GPA and require financial assistance to go to college to obtain a bachelor's degree. Apply at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships. Deadline is October 30th.
Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation: Coca-Cola annually gives out fifty $20,000 and two hundred $10,000 scholarships. Selection is based upon academic achievement, capacity to lead, and hours of dedicated community service. Apply online at www.coca-colascholars.org and click on "Coca-Cola Four Year Award for Seniors." Deadline is October 31st.

Council for America's First Freedom Essay Contest: The Council for America's First Freedom announces the 15th annual First Freedom Student Competition. This first-semester national essay contest offers 9th - 12th grade students an opportunity to compete for a $3,000, $1,500 and $750 award, as they examine the First Amendment and the history and relevance of religious freedom in America and the world today. Elk's Most Valuable Student Scholarships: The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Fraternal Organization of Kansas is awarding scholarships in the amounts of $600 and $4000, with a possibility of a national scholarship. This application is lengthy and requires time, but it is well worth your effort. In the past students at HHS have had success with this scholarship. If you complete the application early enough, the committee chairman will gladly read and critique your essays and application. You may get a copy of the application and chairman information from Mrs. Hoover or go to http://www.elks.org/enf/scholars/. Mrs. Hoover also has a helpful hints sheet when completing the application. The completed application must be to the Clay Center Lodge, 611 5th Street, Clay Center, KS 67432 by November 2nd. Mrs. Hoover will mail completed applications that are given to her by October 28th.
Prudential Spirit of Community Award: If you've made a difference by volunteering in your community over the past year, you could win $1000 and a trip to Washington, D.C. Middle school students and high school students can apply. Just visit http://spirit.prudential.com, click on the "How to Apply" link, and follow the onscreen instructions. When asked for the access key, type the word spirit. After completing the online form, please print it out, sign it, and submit to Mrs. Converse by November 2, 2009.
RuralVoices Youth Contest: Cash awards of $1000, $500, and $250 to winners. Any senior that lives in the 12 county North Central Regional Planning Commission service area (Washington County is in this area) is eligible. This is a writing/photo/video contest. Additional information and registration at http://www.eyeonkansas.org/ruralvoices/index.html. Entries and online registration must be received by November 15th to ruralvoices@eyeonkansas.org.

KU Final Deadline for Freshmen Scholarship consideration: December 1st.
K-State Civic Leadership Scholarship: This scholarship competition if to recognize high school seniors for outstanding public service to the common good. Three scholarships are given that range from $2000 to $4000. To apply complete the K-State scholarship application and complete the K-State Civic Leadership Scholarship application(www.k-state.edu/nss/civicleadership) and provide all supplemental materials. Contact Mrs. Hoover or Mrs. Hynek for more details. Deadline is December 13th by 5:00 p.m.
AXA Achievement Scholarship: This $10,000 scholarship will be offered to one student per state. Ten national scholarships will also be given. If you have reached high goals and have a determination to succeed in college, learn more then get an application at www.axa-achievement.com. Deadline is December 15th.
NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award: Scholarships that range from $1,000 to $10,000 are being offered. Seniors that demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit (does not mean you have to own your own business; FBLA participation could work), meet academic standards, and entering an accredited two- or four-year university, college or vocational institute in the fall of 2009 are eligible. You can apply online at at www.NFIB.com/YEA. Click on "Apply Now" link. Once on ISTS click "APPLY or update a new application" link. You will need to apply for an AIN (applicant identification number and when prompted your access code is NFIB) See Mrs. Hoover for detailed instructions on this application. Deadline for applications is December 31st.
Kansas School Safety Hotline Scholarship Contest: The Kansas State Department of Education and Kansas Highway Patrol are conducting this contest. Three scholarships will be awarded in each of the following areas: 1) 30 second public service announcement for TV, 2) 30-second public service announcement for radio, or 3) 11x17 poster. First place scholarships is for $1250, second for $750, and third for $500. Topics may include school violence, bullying, weapons/bombs, battery/abuse, etc. Entry forms and rules are available online at www.kansashighwaypatrol.org. Entries must be postmarked no later that December 15th.
Bluestem Electric Cooperative Scholarship: The BEC Scholarship Program is eligible to high school seniors whose parents/guardians are members of Bluestem Electric Cooperative, Inc. Applicants are judged on three items: an open book cooperative test, resume/application, and a personal interview. See Mrs. Hoover for more information and application. Application and test are due December 18th.

Nebraska Elks Association Vocational Scholarship Grant: These are open to high school seniors who plan to attend a trade school, technical school or community college. You may not submit an application to Elk's Most Valuable Student if you are submitting an application for this one. See Mrs. Hoover for an application. The application must be to the Fairbury Elks Lodge Number 1203 (525 G Street, Fairbury NE 68352) by January 10th..
National Mupltiple Sclerosis Society's Scholarship: This scholarship is for any senior who has MS or who have a parent with MS. Other rules apply. For detailed guidelines and application information, visit www.nationalmssociety.org/scholarship. Applications must be submitted by January 15th.
McKelvey Foundation Entrepreneurial Scholarship: Available to all high school seniors who have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit by owning and operating their own business(es) while in high school. To qualify you must attend a four year college or university (public or private), own and operate a genuine business (non-profits are eligible), and have at least one employee (even if only part time). Online applications can be found atwww.mckelveyfoundation.org. Deadline is January 25th..
Elk's National Foundation Legacy Awards: The ENF Legacy Awards scholarship program awards up to 500 one-year, $1000 scholarships to the children and grand children of active Elk members who are high school seniors, going to college, and who exhibit the values of the Elks National Foundation: Integrity, Knowledge, Community, and Charity. For details and application go to http://www.elks.org/enf/scholars/. Deadline is mid-January.
Sam Walton Community Scholarship: Seniors must have at least a 2.5 GPA and have taken the ACT or SAT. Go to https://www.applyists.net/IntroPage.asp. Then click on "APPLY or update a new application" link. Follow the onscreen instructions to apply for an AIN (Applicant Identification Number) When prompted use ACCESS KEY: SWCS. The deadline is January 31st.

American Legion Scholarships (listed towards the bottom)
Winfield Solutions Ag Scholarship: This scholarship is for seniors and first and second year college students entering Ag related fields of course study. Ten seniors will be awarded $1000 scholarships each. Go to WinfieldSolutionsLLC.com or see Mrs. Hoover for an application. Deadline is February 1st.
Burger King Scholars Program: These awards are $1000 each and may be used for education expenses. Applicants must be high school seniors who have at least a 2.5 GPA, work part-time a minimum of 10 hours per week (40 weeks per year), actively involved in community service activities, demonstrate financial need, and plan to enroll in an accredited two or four year college, university, or vocational/technical school. Go to http://www.haveityourwayfoundation.org to apply. Last day to submit applications is by postmark deadline February 1st.
Acacia Leadership Scholarship: Acacia Fraternity at KSU is offering a $1000 and two $500 scholarships to incoming male freshmen at KSU. Scholarship winners will be selected based on the application and an interview to be scheduled later in the spring. See Mrs. Hoover for the application. Deadline is February 1st.
ESA Foundation Scholarships: May apply for 3 (only) of 27 different ESA Foundation endowments/scholarships. Open to eligible Kansas residents that are seniors. Must meet one of the following: upper 25% of class, 3.0 GPA, or 22 ACT score. Requires a one page essay. Additional information and application at www.esaintl.com.esaf. There is a $5 processing fee. Mail completed application to Sandy Westbrooke, 16355 W. 138 Terrace, Olathe, KS 66062.
Kansas Society Daughters of the American Revolution Scholarship: This is available to a senior in high school with proven DAR eligibility (be able to prove that an ancestor fought or gave aid in the Revolutionary War) and is attending an accredited college/university. See Mrs. Hoover for application. National DAR scholarships are available at www.dar.org. Deadline is February 1st.
Gladys E. Routh Memorial Scholarship: The applicant must be a senior in high school who is entering a college/university, have a sound academic background, and show Indian heritage (Pottawatomie Indian heritage will be given preference). See Mrs. Hoover for application. Deadline is February 1st.

KFC Colonel's Scholars Program: This scholarship could mean up to $5000 per year for tuition, fees, books, and room and board. Seniors that are eligible must have at least a 2.75 GPA, enroll in a public, in-state college or university, and pursue a bachelor's degree. The online application can be found at http://www.kfcscholars.org. The application is available from December 1 through February 10th.
2010 Commitment to Agriculture Scholarship Program: The Monsanto Company is sponsoring scholarships for one hundred farm youth pursuing careers in agriculture. The scholarship is $1500. For more information and application go to www.monsanto.com. The online application submission deadline is 5:00 p.m. EST, February 15th, and the application signature page must be postmarked by February 22nd.
Best Buy @15 Scholarship: One thousand $1500 scholarships to be given to students with solid grades and involved in community service or work experience. Go to www.bestbuy.com/scholarships to apply. Deadline is February 15th.
James Komatz/Delta Chi Memorial Scholarship: This is a one-time $250 scholarship for the fall semester. It is awarded to a qualifying incoming male freshman who will attend Kansas State University. Must have at least a 3.0. See Mrs. Hoover for application. Applications must be received by February 15th.
Access to Education Scholarships: For the 2008-2009 academic year USA Funds will award up to $3.2 million in renewable scholarships to students demonstrating financial need. Students who plan to enroll in qualified post-secondary-education programs as full-time or half-time undergraduates are eligible for $1,500 awards. For details and application go to www.usafunds.org/scholarship. Applications will be accepted between December 15, 2007 and February 15th.
Kansas Association of Directors of Plant Facilities Scholarship: Three scholarships ($250, $500, $1000) are being offered to the top three qualifying students. These scholarships are available only to graduating seniors of custodial workers and must plan to attend a Kansas college. See Mrs. Hoover for an application. Must be postmarked by February 20th.
March
NCK Catbacker Club Scholarships: Four scholarships are being offered in the amount of $350 to area seniors. Application must be submitted by March 1st. See Mrs. Hoover for an application.
SAMMY Scholarship: America's Milk Producers are giving twenty-five $7500 scholarships. Seniors can nominate themselves at sammy.bodybymilk.com. The deadline is March 6th.
Kansas Society of Certified Public Accountants Scholarship: Scholarships will range from $500 to $1300 and will be offered to students who rank high in the ACT examinations, will attend a Kansas university or college, and plan to major in accounting. Let Mrs. Hoover know if you want your name and ACT scores submitted before March 9th. Then a short essay form will be sent to you and will be due by April 20, 2009.
Senator Robert J. Dole Public Service Scholarship: Up to one hundred twenty-eight $1000 scholarships will be awarded to seniors that have at least a 3.0 GPA, that are involved in a significant amount of volunteer community service projects or public service activities, and are enrolled full-time for 2009 at a Kansas Regents' University or Washburn University. A link to the application can be found at www.sms.scholarshipamerica.org/senatordolepublicservice. Deadline is March 9th.
Kansas Grain and Feed Association Scholarship: This scholarship is for students who are self-starters, possess excellent academic credentials, be good school and community citizens and have a strong desire to continue their education. Applications are available at www.KansasAg.org/KGFA or see Mrs. Hoover. Deadline is March 12th.
Kansas Agribusiness Retailers Association Scholarships: This scholarship is for any high school student planning to major in agronomy, crop science, ag engineering, professional ag-chemical application or a related field of study. Scholarships are for students planning to attend a Kansas post-secondary institution. Applicants must be students who are self-starters, possess excellent academic credentials, be good school and community citizens and have a strong desire to continue their education. Applications are available at www.KansasAg.org/KGFA or see Mrs. Hoover. Deadline is March 12th.
Glenn Lygrisse/KACRAO Scholarship: Four $500 awards are given. Senior must have at least a 3.25 GPA and a minimum ACT composite score of 22. See Mrs. Hoover for application. Must submit by March 12th.
Pony Express Scholarship Essay Contest: Seventeen scholarships ranging from $500 to $2000 will be awarded. Senior must complete an application and write an essay. Get application from Mrs. Hoover. Applications must be returned to Mrs. Hoover by March 12th.
Kansas City Associated Equipment Distributors Scholarship: Four annual scholarships in the amount of $1000 each are awarded to up to four full-time students that will be attending a vocational/technical school and pursuing a certificate or associates degree in Diesel Mechanics or Heavy Equipment Repair. See Mrs. Hoover for application. Deadline is March 15th.
Blue Valley Tele-Communications Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded based on overall character, community and school involvement and financial need. Parents/guardians must be currently subscribed to local BVTC service. See Mrs. Hoover for scholarship application. Applications must be postmarked by March 26th.
Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship is open to any senior that has at least a 2.5 GPA and has demonstrated leadership abilities through participating in community services, extra curricular or other activities. See Mrs. Hoover for application. Deadline is March 31st.
April
Kansas County Clerks' and Election Officials' Association Scholarship: Twelve scholarships are being offered in the amount of $500 each. Student must be majoring in journalism, politic science, or communications. Applications must be to the Kingman County Courthouse by April 2nd. Please see Mrs. Hoover for an application.
Kansas Junior Golf Scholarship: Five scholarships will be awarded to a senior that is chosen based on involvement in junior golf activities (including high school golf), academic performance, leadership, a written essay, and financial need. Go to www.kansasgolf.org, click on "Kansas Golf Foundation" and follow the links for "Scholarships". Deadline is April 2nd.
Kansas County Clerks' and Election Officials' Association News Election Service Scholarship: Scholarships are limited to students who intend to major in Journalism, Political Science or Communications and have a 3.0 GPA. See Mrs. Hoover for application. Applications must be received by the chairperson by April 4th.
Nelnet Scholarship: Nelnet will award $1 million in scholarships this year. There is no essay required to enter or win, and all winners are randomly selected. Just visitwww.nelnet.com/win to enter and students may enter daily. Drawings are held monthly starting November 9, 2007 through August 8th.
Loren Mall Leadership Scholarship: Two $500 scholarships will be awarded to two incoming freshmen males at Kansas State University. Considerations for this scholarship will be based on leadership and academic excellence in high school. See Mrs. Hoover for application. Must be postmarked by April 10th.
Washington County Saddle Club and Rodeo Inc. Scholarship: Applicants must be able to present a current GPA of at least a 3.5 and majoring in an aspect of agriculture. See Mrs. Hoover for an application. Applications must be submitted by April 15th.
Kansas Masonic Foundation Student Loan Program: This programs is designed for seniors who plan to continue their post-secondary education in Kansas. These loans are interest free until you graduate or end the agreement with them. Then the loan is repaid with a low interest rate. If a 3.5 GPA is maintained during your freshmen and sophomore years of college, the loan may be converted to a scholarship for your junior and senior year. This loan may or may not affect your school financial aid. For more information see Mrs. Hoover. Deadline is April 15th.
Sigma Phi Epsilon Kansas Beta Chapter at KSU Balanced Man Scholarship: One $1000, one $500, and two $250 scholarships are available. This scholarship is available to men who will be attending KSU in the fall. Men must demonstrate outstanding excellence in all aspects of scholastics and extracurricular activities. Scholarship recipients are not bound to this fraternity or any other fraternity. For more information see Mrs. Hoover. Deadline is April 15th.
Ayn Rand Essay Contest: This contest involves reading Ayn Rand's book, The Fountainhead and writing an essay on one of three topics. Prizes range from $50 to the top prize of $10,000. For rules or how to submit your essay go to www.aynrand.org/contests. Entry deadline is April 26th.
2009 Sobriety Rocks Scholarship: This competition is for those that express themselves creatively through music, art, writing or video in hopes of winning as much as $3,000 in college scholarships. For more information and application, log onto www.sobrietyrocks.net. Entries are due by April 30th.

American Legion Auxilliary Education Scholarship: The ALA of Kansas will award eight two year scholarships of $500 each ($250 each year). Applicants my be made by children, grand-children, great grand-children or unmarried widows of veterans who served in the Armed forces during certain eligibility dates. See Mrs. Hoover for more details and application. Application must be received by May 1st.
Bill Spaniol Memorial Scholarship:This $500 scholarship is available to seniors with at least a 3.0 GPA that will be attending a Kansas college and shows an interest in biological or physical sciences. Go to www.e-keha.org. Then click on the "scholarship" link on the left. At the bottom of the next page will be two links to this scholarship. Click on both and print the pages. Deadline is May 31st.
*AMERICAN LEGION SCHOLARSHIPS: Listed below are a wide variety of scholarships that are sponsored by The American Legion of Kansas. Please see Mrs. Hoover for rules and application forms.
*Charles W. & Annette Hill Scholarship Fund: This is a $1,000 grant ($500 each semester for any one school year). Applicant must have at least a 3.0 GPA and consideration should be given to those applicants desiring to engage in the field of Science, Engineering, or Business Administration. The applicant must be a descendent of a member of the American Legion and/or Auxiliary. (Due by Feb.15)
*Rosedale Post 346 Scholarship ($1,500); Albert M. Lappin Scholarship Fund ($1,000); Ted and Nora Anderson Scholarship Fund ($500); Hugh A. Smith Scholarship Fund ($500): Applicants for these scholarships must be an average or better student scholastically and the son or daughter of a veteran. The parent(s) must have been a member of the Kansas American Legion and/or Kansas American Legion Auxiliary for the past three consecutive years. The applicant may be the son or daughter of a deceased member whose memberships was paid up in the year of death. (Due by Feb.15)
*The American Legion Department of Kansas Junior Shooting Sports Scholarship: This is a $500 scholarship. Applicant has to be a Kansas boy or girl who has participated in an American Legion sponsored Shooting Sports program in the State and Regional levels. Applicants for these scholarships must be an average or better student scholastically. (Due by Feb.15)
*American Legion Music Committee Scholarship: This is a $1,000 grant. The applicant must have a distinguished background in the field of music and will major or minor in music at at approved junior college or university. Applicants for these scholarships must be an average or better student scholastically. (Due by Feb.15)
*John and Geraldine Hobble Licensed Practical Nursing Scholarship: This is a $300 grant. The applicant must demonstrate financial need, must attend an accredited Kansas school which awards a diploma for Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN), and the applicant must pursue this profession in a health related institution such as a nursing home or hospital located in Kansas. (Due by Feb.15)
*Kansas Sons of the American Jay B. Theilen Scholarship Fund: Five $500 scholarships will be given. Applicants must be the son, daughter, grandson, or granddaughter of a member of the Kansas Sons of American Legion or be a member of SAL for the past three consecutive years. (Due Feb.15)
*Kansas Sons of the American Legion U.S. "Udie" Grant Scholarship Fund: One $500 scholarships will be given. Applicants must be the son, daughter, grandson, or granddaughter of a member of the Kansas Sons of American Legion or be a member of SAL for the past three consecutive years. (Due Feb.15)
*American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program "A Constitutional Speech Contest": Date and location yet to be announced. Please see Mrs. Hoover for the details and application.
*Paul E. Flaherty Athletic Scholarship: This is a $250 grant. The applicant must have participated in some form of high school athletics and must be an average or better student scholastically. (Due by July 15)
Dr. Irvin L. "Click" Cowger Memorial Baseball Scholarship: This is a $500 scholarship. The applicant must be a boy who has participated in Kansas American Legion Baseball program and must be an average or better student scholastically. (Due by July 15)
