Senior Stuff

This web page will contain information for seniors regarding scholarships, important dates, and reminders.  Please check it frequently.  I try to update this page a couple of times a month.  When I update this page, I will put the new information in green so you can look at it first.  If you have any questions or concerns, please come by my office or call me.

If any student is interested in attending a college that is out-of-state, see Mrs. Hoover for details about a program that may make college more affordable.

Scholarships and Deadlines:

 

April

Kansas Masonic Foundation Student Loan Program:  This programs is designed for seniors who plan to continue their post-secondary education in Kansas.  These loans are interest free until you graduate or end the agreement with them.  Then the loan is repaid with a low interest rate.  This loan may or may not affect your school financial aid.  For more information see Mrs. Hoover.  Deadline is April 15, 2008.

Sigma Phi Epsilon Kansas Beta Chapter at KSU  Balanced Man Scholarship:  One $1000, one $500, and two $250 scholarships are available.  This scholarship is available to men who will be attending KSU in the fall.  Men must demonstrate outstanding excellence in all aspects of scholastics and extracurricular activities.  Scholarship recipients are not bound to this fraternity or any other fraternity.  For more information see Mrs. Hoover.  Deadline is April 15, 2008.

Concordia Area Elks Scholarships: This scholarship is specifically targeted for North Central Kansas area seniors.  College-bound applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA and Vo-Tech applicants must have at least a 2.5 GPA.  See Mrs. Hoover for application.  Send applications to Concordia Area Elks Scholarship, Attn: Ray Callaway, 510 Peck Ave., Concordia, KS 66901.  Completed applications must be received by April 15, 2008.

Steve Harper Scholarship Application: This $1000 scholarship is available to seniors who plan to study photography or a natural resources curriculum.  See Mrs. Hoover for application.  Deadline is April 15, 2008.

HHS Alumni Scholarship:  This application is due to Mrs. Hoover by April 18, 2008.  Information was given to seniors on April 7, 2008.

Bill Spaniol Memorial Scholarship:This $500 scholarship is available to seniors with at least a 3.0 GPA that will be attending a Kansas college and shows an interest in biological or physical sciences.  Go to www.e-keha.org.  Then click on the "scholarship" link on the left.  At the bottom of the next page will be two links to this scholarship.  Click on both and print the pages.  Deadline is May 31, 2008.

*AMERICAN LEGION SCHOLARSHIPS: Listed below are a wide variety of scholarships that are sponsored by The American Legion of Kansas.  Please see Mrs. Hoover for rules and application forms.

    *American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program "A Constitutional Speech Contest":  This contest takes place January 16, 2008 at Holton.  Please see Mrs. Hoover for the details and application.

    *Charles W. & Annette Hill Scholarship Fund:  This is a $1,000 grant ($500 each semester for any one school year).  Applicant must have at least a 3.0 GPA and consideration should be given to those applicants desiring to engage in the field of Science, Engineering, or Business Administration.  The applicant must be a descendent of a member of the American Legion and/or Auxiliary. (Due by Feb.15)

    *Rosedale Post 346 Scholarship ($1,500); Albert M. Lappin Scholarship Fund ($1,000); Ted and Nora Anderson Scholarship Fund ($500); Hugh A. Smith Scholarship Fund ($500):    Applicants for these scholarships must be an average or better student scholastically and the son or daughter of a veteran.  The parent(s) must have been a member of the Kansas American Legion and/or Kansas American Legion Auxiliary for the past three consecutive years.  The applicant may be the son or daughter of a deceased member whose memberships was paid up in the year of death.  (Due by Feb.15)

    *The American Legion Department of Kansas Junior Shooting Sports Scholarship:  This is a $500 scholarship.  Applicant has to be a Kansas boy or girl who has participated in an American Legion sponsored Shooting Sports program in the State and Regional levels.  Applicants for these scholarships must be an average or better student scholastically. (Due by Feb.15)

    *American Legion Music Committee Scholarship:  This is a $1,000 grant.  The applicant must have a distinguished background in the field of music and will major or minor in music at at approved junior college or university. Applicants for these scholarships must be an average or better student scholastically.  (Due by Feb.15)

    *John and Geraldine Hobble Licensed Practical Nursing Scholarship:  This is a $300 grant.  The applicant must demonstrate financial need, must attend an accredited Kansas school which awards a diploma for Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN), and the applicant must pursue this profession in a health related institution such as a nursing home or hospital located in Kansas.  (Due by Feb.15)

    *Kansas Sons of the American Legion Commander's Scholarship Fund:  Five $500 scholarships will be given.  Applicants must be the son, daughter, grandson, or granddaughter of a member of the Kansas Sons of American Legion or be a member of SAL for the past three consecutive years.  (Due Feb.15)

    *Kansas Sons of the American Legion U.S. "Udie" Grant Scholarship Fund:  One $500 scholarships will be given.  Applicants must be the son, daughter, grandson, or granddaughter of a member of the Kansas Sons of American Legion or be a member of SAL for the past three consecutive years.  (Due Feb.15)

      *Paul E. Flaherty Athletic Scholarship:  This is a $250 grant.  The applicant must have participated in some form of high school athletics and must be an average or better student scholastically.  (Due by July 15)

    Dr. Irvin L. "Click" Cowger Memorial Baseball Scholarship:  This is a $500 scholarship.  The applicant must be a boy who has participated in Kansas American Legion Baseball program and must be an average or better student scholastically.  (Due by July 15)

 

Important Dates:

ACT Dates:  Check the bulletin board outside Mrs. Hoover's office.  Our school code is 171-230.  If you have not taken the ACT or want to get a better score, you need to take it in October to meet most university/college scholarships deadlines.  Mrs. Hoover will give you an ACT packet within the first two weeks of school or you can register online at www.actstudent.org.
