What's Happening

by Valeria Converse

Congratulations to the Junior High Boys Basketball Team and Coach Martin!  They brought home 3rd place honors from the Blue Valley League Tournament this past Saturday!  Valley Heights boys earned the Championship title and Washington County players came in second.  Team winners for the junior high girls were Washington County -1st, Valley Heights – 2nd and Linn – 3rd.   Now, students at this level have a short athletic break until the track season starts in March.

We have much planned for the last home basketball games prior to Regional playoffs.  Senior players and their parents will be honored between the varsity games.  A number of K-6th grade students will be dancing during half time of the boys’ varsity game.  (Thank you high school cheerleaders for hosting these dance clinics!)  And “Shoot for Loot,”sponsored by the Citizen’s National Bank of Greenleaf, will test the basketball skills of numerous crowd members in an effort to earn money for HHS or Washington Co. High School. Plus, there will be a bake sale where the proceeds will help finance After-Prom.  Seniors and their parents are responsible for bringing in the tasty food items.

Next week, we host one Regional basketball game on Tuesday, February 23rd, at 7:00, when our varsity girls will take on Axtell girls.  If we win, the girls will play Friday in Baileyville against Frankfort with the potential to play on Saturday.

Our varsity boys basketball team earned a bye in the first round of Regional playoffs.  On Thursday, February 25th, they will play the winner of the Axtell vs Bern game which occurs on Tuesday.   Watch for tournament brackets which will be released next week.

Congratulations to Mrs. Chambers and the Future Business Leaders of America who took first place overall in district competition.  This is a first ever accomplishment for Hanover High School!  Forty-five students placed in the top seven divisions to earn this team award.  WOW!

And, congratulations to Mrs. Kyner and the FCCLA chapter members who won the following awards at their STAR Events competition, February 3rd:  Katlin Hagedorn and Sydney Pralle – SILVER in Senior Focus on Children;  Kendra Zabokrtsky, Megan Finley and Hannah Dilley – GOLD in Senior Chapter Showcase Display;  Stephanie Rahe – SILVER in Senior Recycle and Redesign;  Melissa Diederich – SILVER in Senior Life Event Planning; Addie Jackson and Taylor Brummett – BRONZE in Senior Illustrated Talk;  Katie Gerard and Erika Kruse – SILVER in Junior Illustrated Talk;  Christy Bruna, Ashley Rengstorf, and Jenna Kruse – SILVER in Senior Chapter Showcase Manual;  Emily Meyer, Micaella Beikmann, and Lydia Hynek – SILVER in Senior Chapter Service Project Display .

In closing, good luck to our Washington County spelling bee contestants this Saturday. I hope some of you will bring home ribbons!

 ‘Til next week.
