What's Happening

January 19, 2010

The TVL Tournament is well underway and will culminate on Saturday.   See the tournament grid located on another page of the paper for a better idea about potential game times.  For now, know that the girls will play Onaga girls on Thursday, Jan. 21st in the Axtell Gym at 7:30 p.m.  Since the boys won against Valley Heights Monday evening (66-52), they will play Frankfort girls on Friday, Jan. 22nd at 6:00 p.m. in the Baileyville Gym.  The outcome of those games will determine our play time on Saturday.

If the boys continue to win their games this week, we will have additional cause to celebrate as Coach Lohse will reach 300 wins as basketball coach at Hanover High.  That is a huge accomplishment for a coach.  First of all, many coaches don’t stay long enough in one school to reach such a mark.  The time frame in which such is accomplished speaks well for the caliber of players and the coaching ability of the coach!

Coach Lohse reached the 299 count Tuesday evening (Jan. 19th).  Whether Coach Lohse reaches the 300 mark Friday or Saturday or next week at one of home basketball games, we intend to officially honor him on Jan. 29th when Hanover plays Wetmore High.  I hope that any and all who played for Coach Lohse or coached with him or worked with him will come to honor him and his accomplishments!

Hanover Public Schools would also like to invite the public to join our students in two other upcoming events.  This Thursday, we are proud to be able to host one of the Army Semi (Truck) Presentations.  Beginning first period at 8:20, our first group of approximately 20 students will board the semi-truck and be treated to various “stations” that will share information about how to be successful, how to be a great mentor, why one should not use drugs, Army officer program opportunities, simulated games and tests of athletic skills, military career options, and a host of other positive programs.  The Semi Presentations will run eight periods with beginning times as follows:  8:20, 9:10, 10:00, 10:50; 12:10; 1:00, 1:50 and 2:40.   The Army Semi-truck will be set up either in the school parking lot to the south of the new classroom building or down behind the Woods and Ag Shops.

The second upcoming event is the Brandon and Deb Krauss Program about Celebrating Success in Being Drug Free.  Hanover and Linn students in grades 7-12 will be in attendance for this program which will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28th in our high school gym.  Again, the public is invited to attend this event which should last about an hour.

Parents and students are reminded that next Wednesday, Jan. 27th, is a day off for Hanover students unless they are involved with the TVL Scholars Bowl which is hosted by Linn High School this year.  Teachers have an all-day in-service that day and some will be working on science curriculum alignment at the Central Office.  Others will be judging at the Scholars Bowl in Linn, and the rest will be working on VE2 curriculum concerns and special projects.

Though Saturday, February 20th, is a few weeks into the future, I want to remind elementary (K-8) students and parents that it is the day marked for the Washington Co. Spelling Bee which is hosted there this year.  Spelling lists continue to be available through teachers.  I hope you will encourage your children to stretch their vocabulary and increase their spelling and writing abilities.  The “bee” is definitely an opportunity to strut one’s stuff academically!  I hope we will have some winners at it.

Also, on February 20th, Hanover High School’s Forensics team under the direction of Mrs. Mary Strnad will host a forensics invitational.  It will begin around 7:45 a.m. and end around 3:30 p.m.  Between 35 and 40 judges will be needed to help with this event.  Mrs. Strnad asks that anyone who is willing to help, please call her at the high school (337.2881, X 21).  Forensics team members will also be soliciting for judges.  There will be a judging clinic held Tuesday, February 16th at 7:00, to review judging guidelines.  Your help will be most appreciated!

Finally, we will be celebrating Kansas Schools Hot Lunch Week, Jan. 25-29th.  Parents, grandparents, and relatives are invited to join the students of Hanover Public Schools and St. John’s Catholic School by eating lunch with respective students.  We ask that reservations be made at least one day in advance through Barb (337.2281).  There will be no exceptions to this.  Guest meals are $3.25 for adults and children who want to join us for a meal and normally do not eat our hot lunches.  The menus are posted on our school website.  Please join us!

‘Til next week.
