What's Happening

Hanover’s football team and coaches are to be commended again for a stupendous season. I know it was a great game, a great day, and a memorable one for all involved. (I wish I could have been there, but I went to my son Michael’s wedding which occurred in Florida on the 21st.) I also heard that the Hanover cheerleaders did a super job of dancing during the half time. What a showing by the Hanover students! They had tremendous support from Coach Heuer, Coach Lackey and Coach Beikmann as well as Cheer Sponsor Mrs. Walling. The challenge is now on to see if our boys’ basketball team can repeat another as successful year as last. Let’s hope so!
Special congratulations to the following students who have been named to the 2009 Twin Valley League, 8-Man All-League Teams: First Team Offense: Taylor Nicholson, SR, TE and Derrick Gerard, SR, Guard. First Team Defense: Conner Hynek, JR, DL; Derrick Gerard, SR, DL and P; Taylor Nicholson, SR, LB; and Trevor Jueneman, SR, DB. Second Team Offense: Jerod Diederich, SR, QB; Trevor Jueneman, SR, RB; Chad Alexander, SR, TE. Second Team Defense: Austin Steinfort, JR, DB. These football players have worked hard since their freshmen year to attain the State Championship title again this year. And, their efforts certainly paid off.
While discussing sports, be sure to pay attention to the high school website – Daily Bulletin area (www.usd223.org) - for athletic schedule changes which are occurring quite often of late. These changes occur because of gym availability. And, some start times are changing because of schedule conflicts.
Our Site Council met last night and elected two new members to its board. Welcome Mrs. Jane White and Mrs. Lynn Richter! The public is welcome to attend these meetings when school issues/concerns/highlights are discussed. Our next meeting will be January 25th at 7:00 p.m. in Mrs. Mary Strnad’s room.
Post the Hanover Public Schools Holiday Musical to your calendars on Monday, December 7th at 7:00 p.m. Mrs. Tiffany Schoenrock is polishing students’ performances this week and all will be ready for your enjoyment. Do come and support our musicians for an hour or two and share the holiday spirit a bit.
Our junior high basketball teams have already played 3-4 games and continue their efforts this week on Tuesday at Blue Valley with 5:45 starts. The Varsity levels begin their season Thursday, Dec. 3rd at Valley Heights at 4:45. They play again in Seneca against Nemaha Valley on Friday, Dec. 4th at 4:45. Our first high school home games don’t happen until next Tuesday, the 8th, when we take on Clifton-Clyde (4:45 start).
I feel the need to share a few words about student attendance. Students are expected to be in school each day unless they are ill, on a school field trip, participating in a school activity, or have parent permission to be absent for one of the reasons listed in the USD #223 Policy Handbook. For absences due to extended illness, a doctor’s statement may be required. When a student is absent for more than six days in a semester, students do not have to be allowed to make up the homework unless absences are justifiable. When extensive unexcused absences are noted, policies are different and the building principal then involves the SRS or other legal authorities. It is expected that parents/legal guardians will support school authorities regarding these attendance policies and due their best to promote good attendance, no tardies and no playing “hooky.” Support in improving student attendance is needed from the homes.
Academically speaking, there are but three weeks left in this semester. Most of our students are doing very well, but for some…dig in to the homework more and make sure you are prepared for final exams which will be forthcoming soon. Parents, contact our teachers if you have any concerns…any time. Please, don’t wait until the last minute to address issues. Our teachers are here to help students and you!
‘Til next week.
