Hanover’s junior high basketball teams were quite competitive in the well run Blue Valley League tournament last week. The girls’ team took second place when they lost to Washington Co. 56-23 in the championship game. Although the boys’ team played very well, they lost to Clifton-Clyde by two points and came up 4th place in the tournament. Valley Heights' boys took 1st and Blue Valley players claimed 2nd place. Congratulations, coaches and teams!
On Wednesday the 18th, Austin Jueneman, Jennifer Kruse and Rory Nieman will travel with about 15 other area students to Wichita for a tour of the Cessna plant in Wichita. They will take a tour of the factory, participate in a question/answer panel and experience a flight simulator. Departure time is around 5:30 a.m. from Hanover with an estimated return around 6:00 p.m. It should be an enlightening day for them.
Also on Wednesday in Blue Rapids, Kansas Honors Program will recognize three Hanover students for their academic and leadership attributes. John Bruna, LeaAnne Diederich, and Abby Schlabach are the deserving honorees. Congratulations to them for their accomplishments and to their parents Chief (Duane) and Joyce Bruna, Mark and Evelyn Diederich, and Darrell and Debbie Schlabach for their support.
If your elementary student has been talking about food groups, thank Carol Scheer with the River Valley Extension District of K-State Research and Extension. In the 30-40 minutes, once a week for the past five weeks, in each of our elementary classrooms, Mrs. Scheer has shared some kind of story, a writing activity and a food preparation activity geared to help students remember healthy food items. Thus far, grains, vegetables, fruit, and oils groups have been discussed. Just yesterday the milk group was the topic. The first grade students and I got to make pudding in a bag which reinforced the fact that milk is a big component of many food items we eat. What a memorable experience and quite tasty at that! Next Monday will be Mrs. Scheer’s last day with our elementary students. They will be learning about the meat and beans group. I don’t think she will be giving out steak samples, but count on something creative that your students should be able to share with you about this food group. Thank you, Mrs. Scheer, for the fun, educational and healthy information you have entwined in our curriculum.
Basketball games this week include two nights of hoop enjoyment. Thursday night Hanover travels to Alma-Wabaunsee for a 6:00 tip-off for JV boys and Varsity girls. By 7:45 the Varsity boys and the JV girls will begin play. Friday night our high school teams travel to Washington Co. for initial games beginning at 4:45.
Bright and early Saturday morning, Hanover Public Elementary School will host the Washington Co. Spelling Bee for students in Grades 1-8. Students will be working on the first round of words will by 9:00. Good luck, select spelling bee students!
A reminder that next week Wednesday, Feb. 25th, students do not have school. Hanover High School will be hosting the TVL Forensics Meet. Forensics students, Hanover staff, and judges from participating schools will be busy from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. whether performing, evaluating, or dealing with the logistics of conducting a large forensics meet. Watch for team and individual results in next week’s paper.
Meanwhile, it is teaching and learning each day in many ways giving students the best we can. The end of the third nine weeks is March 6th so, Parents, a reminder for students to get those quarter grades up where they belong is not a bad idea. You can be sure that our teachers are also sending that same message.
‘Til next week.
