Syllabus/Parent Handbook for Mrs. Heiman’s
3rd/4th Grade Classroom

 

To encourage children to follow the rules, be respectful, and learn responsibility, there are many positive teaching techniques I will use for individuals and the entire class.  I will always strive to reinforce appropriate behavior, but I will also provide appropriate consequences for inappropriate behavior.

 

In order to help the students grow in becoming their own problem solvers and encourage them to be responsible for their own behavior, I have a few classroom management procedures that you should be aware of so that we may work together to create a positive learning experience for your child.

 

Class Rules - 1. Be responsible - own your actions

                        2. Listen carefully

                        3. Be kind with your words and actions

                        4. Follow directions

                        5. Raise your hand to speak

 

Whole Class Management - The students will compete against me throughout the day.  If, as a class, they are following instruction, maintaining classroom expectations and are all on task, they will receive a point on the scoreboard.  I will earn a point if the students are not following instructions or are not behaving appropriately.  If the students end the day with more points than I have, they win a lightening bug for our jar.  If they do not, no consequences will be administered; they just will not receive a lightening bug.  Once 25 bugs have been earned we will treat ourselves to a whole class party or reward of some type.

 

Individual Management - We will have a clip chart in our room and each morning every student will start at “ready to learn” during the day the students will be asked to move their clothespin clip either up or down depending on behavior.  

Up 3: Outstanding - Students will be rewarded with three punches on their card and a “Brag Sheet” will be sent home.

            Up 2: Great Job - Student will be rewarded with two punches on their card.

            Up 1: Good Day - Student will be rewarded with one punch on their card.

            Ready to Learn - Starting point for each day - no consequences or rewards

            Down 1: Think About It - No consequence, except no punches will be given.

            Down 2: Teacher’s Choice - No punches given and time will be served at recess.

Down 3: Parent Contact - No punches given, time served at recess, and student will fill out a “Think Sheet”

Consequences - Students are free to make their own choices, but in our classroom they will not be free from the consequences of their choices.

 

  1. Think Sheet - A student will be asked to fill out one of these when they have displayed inappropriate behavior.  It asks the student to explain what they did wrong, which rule it broke, how it made them feel, how it may have made others feel, and how they can fix their poor choice.  The student, the teacher, and the parents will all be required to sign this form and it will be kept in the student’s file.  
  2. Additional Consequences - loss of recess time, loss of laptop/iPad privileges, other classroom privileges, parental contact, and/or office referral.

 

 

Rewards -

  1. Lightening bug jar- each day that the students beat me in our teacher vs. students management game they will receive one lightening bug to put in our jar.  Once our jar is full the class will vote on a class reward.
  2. Positive feedback - this will come in the form of either positive comments, stickers, "Brag Sheets" sent home to parents, choice time, etc.
  3. Punch cards- each student will be given a card with space for 20 punches. They will be able to redeem these cards for prizes once they are full.  

 

Bloomz App - See attached sheet for more information and directions on how to join.  (You do not have to join if you prefer not to).  Note: This is a private and secure site so only parents of those in the class will have access.

 

Homework Expectations - Daily homework will typically consist of math and spelling practice, 20 minutes of nightly reading (at least 4 times a week), and any work that was not completed in class that day.  Additional homework may include work on long-term assignments, such as projects or reports, and studying for tests. Students may have homework in different subjects on any given night.  This requires them to become responsible and to organize their time and materials.  The development of these skills is essential for success in school and everyday life.

 

Most students benefit from a designated time and a quiet place which is set aside for homework.  If after two to three weeks of school, considerably more than 30 - 40 minutes (not including nightly reading time) is being spent on homework each night, please contact me.  

 

Late/Missing Work - I feel it is very important for students to turn in their work on time.  I do understand when there are times that the students do not understand the homework, or are truly struggling, in that case please just write a note in their planner and I will handle it a school.  However, I do expect to see that they have at least attempted the task, “It is okay not to know, but it is not okay not to try.” If late or missing work becomes a problem in our class I will address it at that time, but you should expect the student will be staying in during recess time to complete assignments and/or points will be deducted from the assignment.

 

Assignment Books - To help your child have a successful academic school year, our school provides each student with an assignment book/planner.  All daily assignments are written on the board and explained orally. Students are required to write their assignments in their planner each morning.  I ask that you go over your child’s assignment with him/her each night.

 

There is also a section at the bottom of each day for messages, since I will be checking planners each morning this is a great place to send me a little note.  If students fill their planner out well every day, they can earn a small reward weekly.

 

Friday Folders - Each Friday, I will be sending home your child’s weekly work and other handouts in an envelope/folder.  Please review the work with your child and their weekly self-assessment sheets.

 

 

Absences - After an absence, all assignments must be made up.  The students have as much time to make up missed work as the number of school days missed. For example, if a student is absent for two days, two days are allotted to make up the missed assignments.  When students are absent, I will prepare an absent file for them, this may be picked up that day by a parent, sent home with a sibling, or it will be ready for them to work on when they return (please call the school with your preference). *It may be necessary for the student to stay in during recess time or after school to make up tests or other assignments.

 

Tests - There will be tests in spelling and reading each Friday (or possibly Thursday on a short week). Tests for science and social studies will be given following each chapter/unit.  Generally a "Test Alert" and review will be sent home one to two days before each test.  

 

Promoting Community/Self-Confidence - From the first day of school one of my goals for your child is to create an environment in which they feel safe, welcome, and comfortable in an effort to build their self-confidence and a love for school and learning.  There are various ways in which I will go about doing this, some include:

  1. We will spend time at least once a week doing activities that bring us together as a community.  
  2. We will have class meetings to decide on ways in which to create a feeling of safety and belonging or to discuss any class or school issues that are troubling the students.
  3. We will have a "Brag on a Buddy" program which will allow the students to secretly write appreciations or positive things they think about their classmates or see them do.
  4. Each month we will have a new “Star Student.” The kids love to share information about their life outside of school and their classmates love learning more about each other, this is a great way to accomplish both. The chosen student will be allowed to bring pictures and items from home to show off to the class.  Additionally, the star student will be able to choose a day to host a friendship lunch in the classroom where they can invite 2 or 3 friends to lunch (this may include classmates or even a parent or family member).
  5. Character education will be used to promote such values as respect, acceptance, honesty, generosity, courage, and good judgment.
