Course Descriptions

PRE-ALGEBRA
Pre-Algebra is a full year course intended for the freshmen student. Algebra attempts to clarify, simplify, unify, and broaden ideas in mathematics. The biggest difference between algebra and arithmetic is that algebra makes greater use of symbols to represent ideas and numbers. The content standards for this course are designed for students to be able to communicate number sense concepts using multiple representations to reason, solve problems, and make connections within mathematics and across disciplines. The units that will be covered include Real Numbers, Proportional Reasoning, Data Analysis, Algebra, Spatial Geometry, and Perimeter, Area, Surface Area and Volume.

ALGEBRA

Algebra I is a full year course intended for the freshmen student. Algebra attempts to clarify, simplify, unify, and broaden ideas in mathematics. The biggest difference between algebra and arithmetic is that algebra makes greater use of symbols to represent ideas and numbers. One purpose of algebra is to enable us to solve problems that would be difficult or impossible without its methods. It attempts to answer the recurring question “why” and to put emphasis on structure rather than manipulation.

Geometry

Students must have successfully completed Algebra I. This course is recommended for all college and non-college bound students. In the area of geometry, students learn the properties, definitions, and relationships of areas, volumes, and coordinate graphing of two- and three-dimensional figures. Students learn to construct plane figures using a straight edge and a compass. This course includes a study of inductive and deductive reasoning, which helps a person establish a logical system of thought for use in higher math classes as well as in real life situations.

ALGEBRA II
The prerequisite for this class is successful completion of Algebra I and Geometry. This course is recommended for college and non-college bound students. It provides a student the means to solve various types of equations, application problems and inequalities. The skills learned in Algebra I would be reviewed and expanded. The fundamental laws and operations of number systems, relations and functions, and sequences and series are also included. Students are introduced to the mathematical skills, operations and concepts needed for upper level mathematics and science (chemistry and physics). A brief introduction to the trigonometric functions as well as a review of geometry is included in this course. It will provide a background necessary for continued study of mathematics in high school and college.

COLLEGE ALGEBRA (Algebra III)
The prerequisite for this concurrent class with Cloud County Community College is two units of high school algebra with at least a C and a score of 22 on the ACT. Students wanting to take the class who have not taken the ACT must pass the Compass test to qualify for enrollment. Students not meeting the CCCC criteria may still take the class for high school credit. This course reviews standards topics of algebra. Students will study linear and quadratic equations, functional notation, linear, quadratic, rational, logarithmic and exponential functions, systems of equations and inequalities, and matrix algebra. Other topics may be covered at the instructor’s discretion.
