Scholarship Opportunities for Seniors 

K-State Engineering Scholars Day

K-State Engineering Scholars Day is Monday, October 22, 2018.Qualified high school seniors (28 ACT/1310 SAT and above and 3.6 GPA and above) are invited to register to attend. Students must apply by Monday, October 08, 2018 using the online application form located at  https://scholarsday.engg.ksu.edu/ The day is designed to assist high school senior students and their guests in exploring engineering majors, career options and research opportunities. Participants will attend information sessions, interact with faculty, engage with engineering design teams and student organizations, and have an opportunity to explore campus life. Lunch will be provided. Students and their guests are welcome to attend free of charge.

Wendy’s High School Hesiman Award 

This program recognizes students who excel in academics, athletics, and student leadership.  Wendy’s has honored more than 600,000 of the nation’s most esteemed high school seniors who share Wendy’s values of giving back to their communities, treating people with respect, continuing education and excelling on the athletic field. The Wendy’s High School Heisman program will select school winners from the school’s applicants, who will be eligible to compete for the State and National Finalist Award.  Online applications need to be completed by 5:00 p.m. October 17, 2018 and reviewed by a school official by 5:00 p.m. October 19, 2018.  The student application and more information on eligibility can be found at https://www.wendyshighschoolheisman.com/about/

The Horatio Alger Association State/National Scholarship 

Since 1984, the Horatio Alger Association has awarded nearly $143 million in college scholarships to deserving students.  The scholarship programs provide financial assistance to students throughout the nation who have financial need and have exhibited integrity and strength of character, as well as perseverance in overcoming adversity. Applicants must exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree (may transfer from a two-year institution) and have a GPA of 2.0.  This program is offering scholarships ranging from $6,000-$25,000.  You may access the online forms at www.scholars.horatioalger.org    Scholarship deadline is October 25, 2018. I would highly encourage you to apply, as the number of applicants has been somewhat minimal state-wide.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Program Scholarship


The Coca-Cola Scholars Program Scholarship is an achievement-based scholarship awarded to graduating high school seniors. Students are recognized for their capacity to lead and serve, as well as their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities. With the 30th class in 2018, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation supports more than 1,400 exceptional college students each year, with annual scholarships of $3.55 million awarded through 3 nationally recognized programs.  150 Coca-Cola Scholars are selected each year to receive this $20,000 scholarship. The Coca-Cola System believes that investing in students who are leaders, both academically and in servitude to others, will result in positive, lasting change and sustainable communities. The Coca-Cola Scholars Program recognizes and celebrates young people across the country who are committed to make the world a better place. The Hagan Scholarship Foundation 

The Hagan Scholarship Foundation is an exempt foundation whose sole purpose is to provide scholarships to high achieving students in need of financial assistance in order to attend college.  These students will graduate from a public high school located in rural communities having fewer than 50,000 residents.  Three hundred fifty scholarships can be awarded each year. Hagan Scholars attend 236 colleges and universities across 37 states. The dollar amount of each Hogan Scholarship will vary and can be up to $6,000 each semester for eight semesters. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.50 and an ACT score of 23 or higher.  Application can be accessed on September 01, 2018 and the deadline for submission is November 15, 2018.  Details may be viewed at http://haganscholarships.org/

 

Save @ School Scholarship 

Sunflower Union Pacific Credit Union offers a $250.00 scholarship to a graduating senior.  The determining criterion involves the senior who makes the most deposits during their high school career.  In order to gain a “scholarship point,” the deposit must be at least a $5.00 minimum.  Please see me for questions and details.

Mid-September Update

“Rural Kansas…My Community”

The 2018-2019 Rural Voices Youth Contest theme is “Rural Kansas…My Community.”
The NCRPC invites high school seniors in North Central Kansas to prepare an original essay or video based on the contest theme and address the following in their entries:

The North Central Regional Planning Commission vision is for communities in rural Kansas to embrace innovative ideas that will increase prosperity and demonstrate resilience. Thinking big about possibilities can help a community achieve its full potential. What opportunities set your community apart and make it unique? What new opportunities could be embraced to support innovation, prosperity and resilience in your community?

For a chance to win $850, prepare an original work based on this theme, you may enter the contest by preparing an essay or producing a short video.  High School seniors in the following counties may participate:  Clay, Cloud, Dickinson, Ellsworth, Jewell, Lincoln, Marshall, Mitchell, Ottawa, Republic, Saline, and Washington.  In addition to the individual registration for competition, the NCRPC is allowing a team of up to four individuals to work together to complete a video entry.  All team members shall be seniors in high school.  Additional information and registration details are available at  www.ncrpc.org/ruralvoices.   Deadline is November 30, 2018.

Rudd Foundation Scholarship

The Rudd Scholarship is a competitive, 4-year award designed to pay any remaining costs associated with tuition and fees, books and supplies, and room and board after accounting for all other grants, scholarship and financial awards. Twenty RUDD Foundation scholarship are available. To be eligible for this renewable scholarship, a student must be a resident of the state of Kansas, have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above, demonstrate financial need, and must be admitted and will attend either Emporia State, Fort Hays State, or Wichita State University.  Applications will be accepted from October 08 to December 14, 2018.  You may apply online at www.ruddfoundation.org

Scholarship Update—Mid October, 2018 

DAR Good Citizen Scholarship Contest

The DAR Good Citizens program and scholarship contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.  The program is open to all senior class students.  The student selected as the school’s DAR Good Citizen must have the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism to an outstanding degree.  This contest requires the supervised writing of an essay, as well as a personal outline consisting of a description of how you have tried to manifest the qualities of a good citizen.  Only one senior from our school can be selected for this honor.  If you have interest in applying for this opportunity, please let me know no later than October 18, 2018.  I also have details concerning the protocol of this scholarship contest in my office.  Please feel free to stop by and view the documents.     

 Fairbury Elks Lodge 1203 Scholarship Offerings

The Elks National Foundation will award 500 four-year scholarships to the highest-rated applicants in the 2019 competition. Current high school seniors, or the equivalent, who are citizens of the United States are eligible to apply.  Applicants must be citizens of the United States on the date their applications are signed.  Male and female students compete separately.  Applications will be judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need.  Please find a wealth of information concerning the prestigious Most Valuable Student Scholarship, including the online application, at enf.elks.org/mvs    The deadline for the 2019 Most Valuable Student Scholarship Contest is November 15, 2018.  If you should have questions, concerning any of this information, please see me! 

The Elks Association is also offering a Vocational Scholarship Grant for high school seniors who plan to attend a trade school, technical school, or community college.  Deadline for the application to be returned to the local Elks lodge is January 01, 2019.  If interested, I have a copy of the required application form and would be glad to review it with you.  

National Honor Society Scholarship Program

Applications for the 2018-19 NHS Scholarship Program have now opened. All NHS senior members in good standing are eligible to apply. A total of $2 million will be awarded—the highest amount ever in a single year— disbursed among 600 NHS seniors.  NHS students are among those considered to make their higher education dreams more affordable. Sixt Scholarship Program

Sixt-Rent-a-Car is pleased to offer five high school seniors graduating in 2019 the opportunity to receive a $5,000 scholarship. The program is designed to assist high school students who plan to continue their education in college. Scholarships are offered each year for full-time study at an accredited institution of the student's choice.  The Sixt Scholars Program is available to high school seniors graduating in the academic year of 2018/2019 who have a minimum of a 3.7 GPA.  The scholarship will also take into consideration other factors such as financial need and extracurricular activities.  Application deadline is November 30, 2018.  Applications may be accessed at https://studentscholarships.org/scholarship/10645/sixt_scholarship_program_scholarship.php

Bluestem Electric Cooperative, Inc. Scholarship

The Bluestem Electric Cooperative, Inc. Scholarship provides financial assistance to make it possible for high school graduates with cooperative knowledge, scholastic merit and extra-curricular achievements to continue their education. Eligibility requirements include being a current high school senior whose parents/guardians are members of Bluestem Electric Cooperative, Inc. and who are enrolling in an accredited university or college, including junior, community, and vocational or technical college. The Scholarship Application and Open Book Test due date is December 12, 2018 by 4:30 p.m.  Please see me for materials and details.

AXA Achievement Scholarship

The AXA Achievement Scholarship provides over $1.4 million in scholarships to young people throughout the nation representing all 50 states, Washington DC and Puerto Rico. Students have the opportunity to receive a $2,500, $10,000 or $25,000 scholarship. Scholarship winners are ethnically and economically diverse, and share the qualities of ambition and drive, determination to set and reach goals, respect for self, family, and community, and the ability to succeed in college. Burger King Scholars Program

Created in memory of BURGER KING® Co-founder James “Jim” W. McLamore, the BURGER KING Scholars program has awarded $35 million in scholarships to more than 33,000 high school students, BK® employees and their families across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico since 2000. In 2018 alone, the Foundation awarded $3.7 million to more than 3,400 students in North America. Scholarship grants range from $1,000 to $50,000 and are intended to help students offset the cost of attending college or post-secondary vocational/technical school. Recipients are selected based on their grade point average (GPA), work experience, extracurricular activities and community service. Application deadline is Dec. 15, 2018. Kansas State Chapter of ACACIA Fraternity

The Acacia Leadership Scholarship is a one-time scholarship awarded to incoming male freshmen at the Manhattan Campus of Kansas State University who display excellence in academics, motivation for personal success, and an interest in studying the principles of leadership.  Priority deadline is December 17, 2018 at 5:00 p.m.  Application copies can be accessed and submitted online at: www.acaciaksstate.org

The GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program

The GE-REGAN Foundation scholarship program is committed to cultivating the next generation of citizen-leaders. The program is intended for high school seniors who demonstrate leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship.  Each year, the scholarship program selects roughly 20 college-bound students who excel in these areas to receive $10,000 renewable scholarships—up to $40,000 total per recipient.  The online application may be accessed at reaganfoundation.org/scholarships. Thedeadline for this scholarship is January 04, 2019.

Association of Educational Office Professionals

Margaret Van Horn Scholarship

Funds for the Margaret Van Horn Scholarship have been allocated by members of the Kansas State Department of Education Association of Educational Office Professionals (KSDE AEOP). The scholarship program is open to current Kansas High School, College, and/or Technical School students. Applicant must intend to continue his/her education in an education or business-related program. Applicant must be enrolled in a minimum of nine semester hours (at least half-time). Enrollment must be in an accredited post-secondary educational facility within the state of Kansas. A scholarship is awarded annually. The amount is based on gifts and funds raised by the association. The amount for this year is $300.00. Use of the scholarship award is intended to offset the cost of tuition, books, class fees, supplies, or other scholastic expenses. Applications must be postmarked by January 17, 2018. I have enclosed a copy of the application.

Central Valley Ag Scholarship

The Central Valley Ag Scholarship Program is to assist the further education of students of CVA member-owners and CVA employees interested in pursuing higher education in an agriculturally related field. CVA will offer (16) $1,000 scholarships to students of CVA member-owners and (4) $1,000 scholarships to students of CVA employees.  The 2018-2019 CVA Scholarship Program is now open for applications. Complete guidelines and the application may be accessed at CVACOOP.COM/CAREERS.   The scholarship deadline is March 01, 2019.

The Pony Express Scholarship Essay Contest     

The Pony Express Riders of Kansas have established the Pony Express Scholarship Essay Contest.  There are seventeen available scholarships which will be awarded to the top entries chosen by a team of judges. The scholarship amounts are as follows:  First Place $2,000; two $1,500; three $1,000; six $750; and five $500 scholarships. I have enclosed the application and details for this scholarship.  We have always done quite well with this scholarship and I would highly encourage you to apply!  I will be happy to mail the applications to Mr. Ladner on  March 12, 2019 to ensure they are delivered in timely fashion, as the deadline is March 15, 2019.  Please see me if you need assistance with this prestigious scholarship application and essay entry.

Scholarship Update

Kansas Kiwanis Foundation

Kiwanis is a service organization dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time.  The organization provides scholarships to Kansas seniors who are pursuing post-secondary education. Last year they granted over thirty scholarships amounting to over $20,000.   Applications are available on line at www.kskiwanis.org/scholarships.  I have also included the hard copy application in this packet.  Deadline for mailing is a postmark date of February 01, 2019.

County Weed Directors Association of Kansas

The County Weed Directors Association of Kansas (CWDAK) is a professional organization providing training and assistance for the 105 weed directors in Kansas. The CWDAK would like to help students preparing for careers in the agriculture/agronomy industry and increase awareness of the County Weed Department’s role in local government.  The CWDAK will be sponsoring at least four $500 scholarships for the fall 2019 semester.  Requirements include the status of a Kansas High School Senior, maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, and majoring in an agriculture or plant science field of study (preference given to agronomy and plant science.  The completed application needs to be received in the office of Duane Bruna, Scholarship Committee, at 812 B. Street, Washington, KS   66968 by February 01, 2019.  A signed copy of your high school transcript must be included.  An online application and details can be found on the website at http://www.cwdak.org  A Relative Scholarship application is also available. 

Schaefer Outfitter Scholarship

Schaefer Outfitter is in the business of helping people feel and look their best, so they can do their best out on the ranch. It’s in this spirit they are committed to helping students pursue an education in agriculture. They are announcing the launch of the annual Schaefer Outfitter Scholarship Program in support of those who plan to pursue one of the following degrees:  Agriculture, Agricultural Business and Economics, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Agribusiness, Agriculture Education, Agriculture Science, Agricultural Engineering, or Agricultural Economics.  Schaefer Outfitter will offer a scholarship of $1,000 to be paid to any college or university towards the cost of tuition. The scholarship money will be paid in one lump sum payment to the school and cannot be split into various semesters.  Applicants should be senior high-school students attending college for the Fall 2019 or Spring 2020 semester.   During the application process, they will be accepting applications in the following way: Write a response at least 500 words, and up to 1,500 words, in length about what or who inspired you to pursue a career in agriculture. The application should be emailed to Rick@SchaeferOutfitter.com only during the application period. Applications sent after the deadline will not be considered for Fall 2019 or 2020 semester. Make sure to include your contact information. List your full name, phone number, mailing address and email address. Applications must be in Microsoft Word format or PDF and no other formats will be accepted.  Do not include anything other than your article and contact information.  They will be accepting any and all applications through April 30, 2019.

Career Cruising Scholarship Exploration

Great News!  The Financial Aid section of Career Cruising includes details on thousands of private scholarships, grants, awards, fellowships, and other assistance programs that can help students pay for their post-secondary education.  To search for a specific scholarship or organization offering financial support, you can enter the name or other keywords in the search box, or search alphabetically. Click the name of a scholarship from the list to learn more about the award, including donor, contact information, amount, criteria, application requirements, and deadline.  To access the Financial Aid Selector, click on Financial Aid at the top of the page and next click the Financial Aid Selector from the menu at the top of the page or the Start Selector button on the left side of the page.  To save a scholarship to My Plan, click the Save To My Plan button at the top of the award profile page. Saved scholarships will appear in the My Scholarships & Financial Aid section.

Kansas Grain and Feed Association Scholarships 

The Kansas Grain and Feed Association will award the following scholarships for the

2017-2018 school year on the basis of merit:

  • 1 – $500 Dub and Inez Johnson Memorial Scholarship ($250 each semester)
  • 4 – $1,000 KGFA Scholarships ($500 each semester)
  • 14 – $1,500 KGFA Scholarships ($750 each semester)

Requirements for this scholarship include applicants who are graduating Kansas high-school seniors; are self-starters; maintain excellent academic credentials; are solid school and community citizens; have a strong desire to continue their education; and plan on attending any Kansas 4-year university, community college or vocational technical school. The deadline for this application is 5:00 p.m., March 01, 2019—no exceptions will be made.  Application and scholarship details may be accessed at https://www.ksgrainandfeed.org/about/scholarship-program/  I have also enclosed an application in this folder.  Only  mailed applications will be accepted. Each applicant must mail six printed application packets, complete with all required materials (see bottom of application for additional material requirements).

The Kansas Agribusiness Retailers Association Scholarship

The Kansas Agribusiness Retailers Association will award the following scholarships for the 2018-2019 school year on the basis of merit:

  • 1-$500 Jim Lee Memorial Agribusiness/Agronomy Scholarship
  • 6-$1,500 Agribusiness/Agronomy Scholarships

Requirements for this scholarship include applicants must be a graduating high school senior planning to major in an agricultural related field of study and is enrolling in a Kansas 4-year university, community college or vocational technical school. Applicants must also exhibit excellent academic standing, good school and community citizenship, a strong desire to continue post-secondary education, and self-motivation. The deadline for this application is 5:00 p.m., March 01, 2019—no exceptions will be made.  Application and scholarship details may be accessed at https://www.ksretailers.org/about/scholarship-program/  I have also enclosed an application in this folder.  Only mailed applications will be accepted. Each applicant must mail five printed application packets, complete with all required materials (see bottom of application for additional material requirements).

Farmers Cooperative Scholarship 

Farmers Cooperative will award a $500.00 scholarship to one graduating senior that will be attending college as a full time student majoring in agriculture or an agricultural related field.  To be eligible for this scholarship, students must submit an application along with an essay and their parents must be active members of Farmers Cooperative.  I have enclosed a copy of the scholarship application which is due in my office by March 10, 2019.

KACRAO Scholarship

The Kansas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (KACRAO) offers scholarships to reward students who have demonstrated quality leadership during their high school years. There are four $500 awards available each academic year, which may be used at KACRAO member institutions. The scholarships will be designated as follows; one per school type: four-year public, four-year private, community college, and technical college. The awards are not need-based and may be used in conjunction with other awards. To be eligible for consideration for these scholarships, students must be in their senior year at a Kansas high school, have a cumulative seventh semester GPA of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale, and submit an application, which includes uploading a one-page essay, letter of reference, and resume. The deadline to apply for the scholarship is March 15, 2019. Successful award recipients will be notified in May and posted on the KACRAO website after May 15, 2019.  The 2019 KACRAO Scholarship information is available for applicants at https://kacrao.memberclicks.net/kacrao-scholarship.

The Kansas Board of Regents Student Aid Program 

I have enclosed a copy of the listing for the Kansas Board of Regents scholarship/grants. If interested in any of the scholarships, you may apply online at www.kansasregents.org or complete the paper version of 2019-2020 State of Kansas Student Aid Application. I do have the original paper application packet in my office, which outlines the qualifying criteria.  Please feel free to look at it.  Please submit application materials before the priority deadline of May 01, 2019, as funding is limited.

Blue Valley Tele-Communications Scholarship

Blue Valley Tele-Communications has over $16,000 in scholarship money available to students of parents subscribed to its services.  Applicants will be critiqued on personal achievements, community and school involvement, future plans, and financial need.  Scholarship applications are available on line at www.bluevalley.net/about .  I have also enclosed scholarship information and a copy of the application in this folder.  Applications must be postmarked by March 17, 2019.

Barnes Lions’ Club Scholarship

For the past several years, the Barnes Lion’s Club has given a scholarship to a student that is connected to the club or does community service in the Barnes area.  Beginning this year, the Barnes Lions’ Club is offering two scholarships and students in the Hanover, Linn, and Washington schools will be considered.  The club has also decided to require students to fill out a basic application form, which I have included.  Application deadline is April 01, 2019.   

The Mansfield Family Foundation Scholarship

The Mansfield Family Foundation Scholarship is awarded to persons who graduated from school districts which lay in the borders of Washington County, KS.  Although there are no restrictions as to who may qualify to be a recipient of this prestigious scholarship, certain considerations might be given extra attention.  Those items include:  persons who may not otherwise be able to continue their education; persons who desire to enter some field in the medical profession; or persons who desire to return to Washington County, KS to pursue their occupation or profession after completing their education.  Further details are outlined in the application packet which I have enclosed in this folder. Application deadline is prior to April 01, 2019.

The Washington County Saddle Club and Rodeo, Inc. Scholarship

The Washington County Saddle Club and Rodeo, Inc. is offering a scholarship in the amount of $500 to a Spring, 2018 graduating high school senior.  The candidate must be attending a two or four-year college majoring in an aspect of agriculture.  I have enclosed the scholarship application which has a deadline of April 01, 2019.

The Kansas County Clerks’ and Election Officers’ Association News Election Service Scholarship

The Kansas County Clerks' and Election Officials' Association awards scholarships annually to Kansas high school seniors and college freshmen and sophomores, provided they carry a minimum 3.0 GPA. The scholarships are for those students who major in Journalism, Political Science, Communications, or Business.  This scholarship has been in place for several years and was started by the funds the KCCEOA received from the Associated Press and major news outlets for election night reporting. The bulk of the funding now comes from donations and from funds received through a silent auction held annually at the spring conference of the association. This scholarship program has awarded hundreds of scholarships to the youth of Kansas over the years and hopes to continue to do so in the years to come.  Electronic access to instructions and application may be found at http://www.kcceoa.org/scholarship/   The deadline for submission of this scholarship is March 29, 2019.
